The same Wikipedia tells us that this is a technique used by sellers, consisting of endowing the product or service being sold with certain additional characteristics that give them additional value and incline the client to purchase precisely this improved product or service.

However, the topic of Upsell technologies is much broader than the general mention from Wikipedia. On the one hand, I have already written an article on this topic in the magazine “Director”, on the other thailand telegram  hand, a magazine article cannot fully describe all Upsell technologies. Upsell was first introduced on a large scale by McDonald’s with its famous phrase: “Would you like to add fries to your order?” or “Would you like a larger Coke for only XX cents? ”

It is not known exactly how much such phrases brought McDonald’s. However, the fact that customers can be sold to at the moment when their brain is in a buying state has greatly influenced the sales industry.

Whenever I go to Sturbucks

When I order coffee I always hear: “Would you like a bigger portion for XXX rubles? ”

You understand that the cost of an additional 200 milliliters of sweet water with coffee is how does judicial recovery work in practice?  minimal. Therefore, one can only imagine how much money this phrase brings to Starbucks.

These tactics do not cost companies a penny. But they bring in millions of dollars. This is a very simple, but at the same time effective mechanic.

But this does not mean that

Upsell techniques work only in large businesses. The beauty of it is that anyone can use it: china leads  from an individual entrepreneur to an international corporation.

When you buy shoes, a resourceful seller will easily knock 50% off your second pair. Why? Because he knows that 50% of the cost of the product is spent on attracting a client. And if you are already here, he can easily knock the price off the second pair, since he no longer needs to look for a client, which means the costs will be zero.

Similarly, when you buy a suit, a smart salesperson will advise you a shirt, tie and belt.  You need these accessories anyway, so the margin on the suit may be small, but on accessories he can make hundreds of percent.

If you see promotions like “3 for the price of 2”, “Every 10th visit is free”, “People who bought this product also bought…” and the like – these are all varieties of Upsell techniques.
